Supporting the aspirations of families around the world is important to us at Change Merchants. While it’s not the whole solution, we know that an important way to support development in marginalised communities is to provide economic opportunities for women.
For this reason we’ve included some great products in the Mother’s Day gift boxes from producers that directly support women, and which protect children from exploitation in the production process. Since it’s Mother’s Day, we’d like to put a spotlight on one of our favourites.
Coco-Mango Shea Soap
Shea butter production is a female-dominated industry in many parts of Africa, including Ghana, where Global Mamas make their shea soap. Shea butter is known in some places as “women’s gold”, not only for its rich golden colour but also because it primarily provides employment and income to millions of women across the continent.
This is where Global Mamas, as a Fair Trade accredited collective, come in. They have established themselves to ensure the primarily female workforce is paid fairly, and enjoys safe and reasonable working conditions. Without such protections, women are at risk of exploitation and under-payment.
